What is the Saptapuri — The Seven Sacred Cities?
Saptapuri means the seven cities that Hindu tradition counts as the most sacred places to live, die and be remembered. The list is Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar, Kashi, Kanchipuram, Avantika and Dwarka. Unlike the Jyotirlingas, which are single shrines, each Saptapuri is a whole city with many temples, ghats and neighbourhoods, so a visit is measured in days rather than hours.

Why does the Saptapuri — The Seven Sacred Cities matter?
The seven are not grouped by deity. Ayodhya and Mathura are tied to Rama and Krishna, Kashi and Avantika to Shiva, Dwarka to Krishna as king, Haridwar to the Ganga, and Kanchipuram to both Shiva and Vishnu traditions along with its temple architecture. What binds them is the belief that they are places of liberation.
For a traveller, that matters practically: these are cities, not stops. The temple you came for is usually one of several dozen, and the ghats, bazaars and older quarters are part of what people come to see.
In what order should the Saptapuri — The Seven Sacred Cities be done?
No sequence is prescribed. Geography again gives the sensible groups:
- North-central: Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi, all in Uttar Pradesh, with Haridwar in Uttarakhand within reach of the same trip
- Western: Dwarka in Gujarat, often paired with Somnath
- Central: Avantika, which is the traditional name for Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh
- Southern: Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, usually part of a separate south India itinerary
How do you plan the Saptapuri — The Seven Sacred Cities?
Give each city at least a full day, and two for Kashi. The most common regret is treating a Saptapuri as a half-day halt between two other places.
Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi work well as one Uttar Pradesh trip by rail. Haridwar adds a natural fourth if you have the days. Dwarka and Kanchipuram are far enough from that cluster that forcing them in creates two long, wasteful travel days.
Festival dates change the character of these cities completely. Kashi during Dev Deepawali, Mathura during Janmashtami and Haridwar during major snan days draw very large gatherings; plan deliberately for or away from them.
Darshan timings for individual temples are on the temple pages linked here. Confirm them near your travel date.
When is the best time for the Saptapuri — The Seven Sacred Cities?
October to March is comfortable for all seven. The north-central cities are hot from April to June, and the monsoon affects the Ganga ghats at Kashi and Haridwar.
Temple timings, aarti schedules and access rules change on festivals, eclipses and special occasions, and some shrines are seasonal. Please confirm with the temple or the local administration close to your travel date.
