What is Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir known for?

Bade Ganeshji ka Mandir stands just above the Kotitirth tank in the Mahakaleshwar complex, and holds one of the largest Ganesh images in the country — the name means simply the temple of the big Ganesh. The image is of sindoor-coated stone, and beside it stands a panchmukhi Hanuman. The temple also houses a Sanskrit pathshala and an astrological study centre, which is in keeping with Ujjain's long association with Sanskrit letters and with jyotish.

Why is Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir significant?

Ganesh is invoked first in any Hindu rite, and the temple's position at the entrance to the Mahakal complex reflects that order — most pilgrims take darshan here before going on to Mahakaleshwar. The image is of the seated form and is among the largest artistic Ganesh images in India. The pathshala attached to the temple has taught Sanskrit and jyotish for generations.

Which rituals and festivals are held at Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir?

Modak and laddu, durva grass, red flowers and sindoor are the customary offerings. Wednesday is the day associated with Ganesh and is the busiest day of the week here.

Ganesh Chaturthi in Bhadrapada (August or September) is the principal festival, kept over ten days. Angarak Chaturthi, when the fourth day of the waning moon falls on a Tuesday, is also observed.

How do you reach Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir?

The temple is within the Mahakaleshwar complex above Kotitirth, about two kilometres from Ujjain Junction railway station. It is on the way in or out of Mahakal darshan and needs no separate trip.

Footwear is left at the complex stands. Indore airport is about 55 kilometres away.
