What is Ram Ghat known for?
Ram Ghat is the best known of the bathing ghats on the Shipra at Ujjain, and the oldest part of the city's riverfront still in daily use. It sits in the old city below Harsiddhi, a broad flight of stone steps down to the water with small shrines along its length. Pilgrims bathe here before darshan at Mahakaleshwar, and the evening aarti on the ghat — lamps set on the water as the light goes — is the image most people carry away from Ujjain.
Why is Ram Ghat significant?
Ram Ghat is the principal site of the Shahi Snan during Simhastha, the Kumbh that comes to Ujjain every twelve years and is next due in 2028. The Shipra is one of the rivers named in the Puranic accounts of the amrit that was carried across the sky, and Ujjain is one of the four places where the Kumbh is held on that account. Outside Simhastha years the ghat remains in continuous use for daily snan, for shraddh and tarpan during Pitru Paksha, and for the rites that follow a death.
Which rituals and festivals are held at Ram Ghat?
Bathing in the Shipra before temple darshan is the customary sequence in Ujjain, and Ram Ghat is where most pilgrims do it. Shipra aarti is performed on the ghat in the evening. Pitru Paksha, in Bhadrapada (September or October), brings families here for shraddh rites.
Kartik Purnima, Mahashivratri and Somvati Amavasya are the other occasions the ghat is busiest. During Simhastha the entire riverfront is given over to the mela.
How do you reach Ram Ghat?
Ram Ghat is in the old city, about a kilometre from Mahakaleshwar and roughly two kilometres from Ujjain Junction railway station. The approach is through narrow lanes, so most visitors walk in from Harsiddhi or from the Mahakal side.
It is best seen in the early morning or at the evening aarti. The steps can be slippery near the water. Indore airport is about 55 kilometres away.
