What is Mansa Devi Temple known for?
Perched atop Bilwa Parvat, Mansa Devi Temple is dedicated to the goddess who is believed to fulfil the sincere wishes of devotees. The temple is reached by a scenic ropeway ride offering panoramic views of Haridwar and the Ganga.
Why is Mansa Devi Temple significant?
Mansa Devi stands on the Bilwa Parvat above Haridwar and is one of the three hilltop Shakti shrines of the town, with Chandi Devi and Maya Devi. The goddess is worshipped as Mansa — from manas, the mind — and the temple is associated with the fulfilment of a sincerely made wish. Devotees tie a thread to the tree in the courtyard when they make one, and return to untie it when it is fulfilled.
The temple is also counted among the Siddh Peethas of the region.
Which rituals and festivals are held at Mansa Devi Temple?
Red cloth, coconut, flowers and chunari are the customary offerings. The tying and untying of threads on the courtyard tree is the practice the temple is best known for. Aarti is held morning and evening.
Both Navratris are kept with nine days of worship, and the Kumbh years bring the largest gatherings. Many pilgrims bathe at Har Ki Pauri before making the climb.
How do you reach Mansa Devi Temple?
The temple is reached by the Mansa Devi ropeway from near Har Ki Pauri, a ride of a few minutes, or on foot by a stepped path of about 1.5 kilometres that takes roughly half an hour. The ropeway station is about a kilometre from Haridwar Junction railway station.
A combined ropeway ticket for Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi is available and is the usual way to do both in one day. The ropeway does not run in high wind or heavy rain.
