What is Chandi Devi Temple known for?
Chandi Devi Temple on the Neel Parvat honours Goddess Chandi. One of Haridwar's 'siddha peeths', the temple has been a place of tapas and worship for centuries, drawing seekers of both blessing and shakti darshan.
Why is Chandi Devi Temple significant?
Chandi Devi stands on the Neel Parvat, on the far side of the Ganga from the main town of Haridwar. The temple is counted among the Siddh Peethas of the region, and the image is held in tradition to have been installed by Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century, with the present temple built in the nineteenth by Suchat Singh of Kashmir. The goddess is worshipped in her Chandi form, and the hill has long been a place of tapas.
Which rituals and festivals are held at Chandi Devi Temple?
Red cloth, coconut, flowers, chunari and sindoor are the customary offerings. Aarti is held morning and evening. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the traditional days for Shakti worship.
Chandi Chaudas and both Navratris are the principal observances, and the Kumbh years bring the largest numbers. The Neel Parvat also holds the Anjani Mata temple, associated with Hanuman's mother, which many visitors add to the same trip.
How do you reach Chandi Devi Temple?
The temple is reached by the Chandi Devi ropeway from near Gauri Shankar, a ride of a few minutes, or on foot by a path of about three kilometres that takes an hour and a half or so. The ropeway base is roughly four kilometres from Haridwar Junction railway station, across the river from Har Ki Pauri.
A combined ticket with the Mansa Devi ropeway is available. The ropeway does not run in high wind or heavy rain.
