What is Mamleshwar Temple known for?

Mamleshwar, also called Amaleshwar, stands on the south bank of the Narmada at Omkareshwar, across the river from the Omkareshwar temple on Mandhata island. The two are worshipped together: a substantial body of scriptural opinion treats Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar as two forms of one Jyotirlinga rather than as separate shrines, and traditional practice is that darshan of Omkareshwar is completed only with darshan of Mamleshwar. The temple is older and plainer than its neighbour across the water — low stone halls, carved pillars, and a quiet that the island side does not usually have.

Why is Mamleshwar Temple significant?

The Shiva Purana names Omkareshwar among the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the account of the Jyotirlinga splitting into two forms — Omkareshwar and Amaleshwar or Mamleshwar — is the basis of the practice of visiting both. Copper plates and inscriptions found at the site record grants made to the temple by the Paramara rulers, which places sustained royal patronage here from at least the eleventh century. Devotees making the Narmada parikrama pass this bank, and many complete the Jyotirlinga darshan on foot between the two temples.

Which rituals and festivals are held at Mamleshwar Temple?

Abhishek with Narmada water is the central act of worship, and bel patra, dhatura, flowers and bhasma are offered as at any Shiva temple. Monday is the customary day for Shiva worship, and the month of Shravan (July or August) is when the temple sees its heaviest observance.

Mahashivratri, in Phalguna (February or March), is the principal festival. Kartik Purnima and Narmada Jayanti are also kept, both drawing on the river rather than the temple alone. Many pilgrims take a dip in the Narmada before darshan.
