What is Durga Kund Temple known for?
The Durga Kund Temple, built in the 18th century, is dedicated to Goddess Durga. Its distinctive red colour, nagara-style shikhara and the sacred Durga Kund tank make it one of Varanasi's most photographed temples.
Why is Durga Kund Temple significant?
The Durga Kund temple was built in the eighteenth century, by tradition under the patronage of Rani Bhabani of Natore, and is among the best known Shakti shrines of Varanasi. It is built in the nagara style, painted in the red ochre associated with the goddess, and takes its name from the rectangular tank — the kund — beside it, which was once connected to the Ganga. The image of the goddess is held in tradition not to have been installed but to have appeared of itself.
Which rituals and festivals are held at Durga Kund Temple?
Red cloth, chunari, coconut, flowers and sindoor are the customary offerings. Aarti is held morning and evening, and Tuesdays and Saturdays are the traditional days of Shakti worship.
Both Navratris are kept with nine days of worship, and the temple is at its busiest then. Durga Puja in Ashwin also draws large numbers. The kund beside the temple is at the centre of the observances.
How do you reach Durga Kund Temple?
The temple is on Durgakund Road near Banaras Hindu University, about six kilometres from Varanasi Junction and roughly 30 from the airport at Babatpur. Autos and e-rickshaws reach it directly.
Sankat Mochan is a short distance away and the two are almost always visited together, often with the Tulsi Manas temple which stands beside Durga Kund.
