What is ISKCON Temple, Ujjain known for?
The ISKCON temple in Ujjain, formally Shri Shri Radha Madanmohan Mandir, stands on Bharatpuri Road and is one of the calmer stops on the city's temple circuit. Built in white marble and set back from the road in its own grounds, it is run by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness on the lines of its temples elsewhere: a clean, unhurried hall, scheduled aartis, continuous kirtan and a prasadam counter. The main altar holds Radha and Madanmohan; side altars hold Gaura-Nitai and Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra.
Why is ISKCON Temple, Ujjain significant?
Ujjain's connection to Krishna is older than the temple. The Bhagavata Purana records that Krishna and Balarama, with their friend Sudama, were sent to the ashram of Rishi Sandipani at Ujjain to study — the sixty-four arts learned there are part of the traditional account of Krishna's education. Sandipani Ashram, a short drive away, marks that site.
The ISKCON temple, founded in the modern era, gives that association a living daily form of worship, and its schedule of aarti, discourse and kirtan draws both residents and pilgrims who are in the city primarily for Mahakaleshwar.
Which rituals and festivals are held at ISKCON Temple, Ujjain?
The day follows the standard ISKCON sequence: Mangala Aarti before dawn, Tulsi puja, Shringar darshan after the deities are dressed, Guru Puja and a Bhagavatam discourse in the morning, a midday offering, then Sandhya Aarti in the evening with kirtan. The sanctum is closed in the middle of the day while the deities rest.
Janmashtami is the largest festival of the year here, observed with abhishek and night-long kirtan. Radhashtami, Gaura Purnima, Govardhan Puja and Kartik — the month-long Damodar lamp offering — are also kept. Prasadam is served at the temple, and the Govinda's restaurant on the premises serves vegetarian meals through the day.
How do you reach ISKCON Temple, Ujjain?
The temple is on Bharatpuri Road, roughly four kilometres from Ujjain Junction railway station and about three kilometres from Mahakaleshwar. Autos and cabs run to it from anywhere in the city. There is parking on the premises, which is not always true of temples in the older parts of Ujjain, so it is an easy stop by car.
Most visitors pair it with Sandipani Ashram and the Gopal Mandir, both connected to Krishna and both within a short drive. Indore, with the nearest airport, is about 55 kilometres away.
