What is Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga known for?
Trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Uniquely, the linga here has three faces representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Situated at the source of the sacred Godavari river beside the Brahmagiri hills, Trimbakeshwar is particularly sought for Kaal Sarp and Narayan Nagbali puja.
Why is Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga significant?
Trimbakeshwar is named among the twelve Jyotirlingas in the Shiva Purana. What sets the linga here apart is its form: rather than a single shaft it is three small lingas set in a hollow, understood as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva together — the name Trimbak carries that sense of three. The temple stands at the foot of the Brahmagiri hill, from which the Godavari rises, so the source of the river and the Jyotirlinga occupy the same place.
The Godavari is the longest river of peninsular India and Trimbakeshwar is its Kushavarta kund, the tank regarded as its formal source.
The present temple was built in the eighteenth century by Peshwa Balaji Bajirao in black basalt, and the carving on it is among the finest of its period.
Which rituals and festivals are held at Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga?
Abhishek with Godavari water is the central offering, with bel patra, flowers and bhasma. The sanctum is small and darshan is from a short distance for most visitors. The temple keeps aartis through the day, and Monday, the day of Shiva, is the busiest.
Mahashivratri is the principal festival, and the month of Shravan the main season. The Kushavarta kund beside the temple is used for snan before darshan. The Simhastha Kumbh of Nashik, which follows its own twelve-year cycle, brings its bathing to the Godavari here and at Ramkund in Nashik.
How do you reach Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga?
Trimbakeshwar is at Trimbak town, about 28 kilometres from Nashik — roughly an hour by road, with buses and cabs running through the day. Nashik Road railway station is about 38 kilometres from the temple and is on the Mumbai–Bhusaval line. Mumbai is roughly 180 kilometres away by the Mumbai–Agra highway, and the nearest airports are Nashik and Mumbai.
The Brahmagiri climb, about 700 steps to the Godavari source, starts near the temple and takes two to three hours for the round trip. Footwear is left at the stands outside.
