What is Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth known for?
INTRODUCTION: A stunning destination among Ujjain's holy sites is the Harsiddhi temple. It is one of the 51 "shaktipeeths" of Mata Sati that exist in the nation. The statue of Annapurna, which is dark red in colour, is positioned between the figures of Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati. The Sri Yantra, a symbol of power or shakti, is also kept at the shrine. According to the Shiva Purana, here is the point at which Sati's elbow fell as Shiva took her flaming corpse from the sacrifice fire. One of the temple's main draws and a must-see for visitors is its architecture. The temple's architecture has considerable Maratha elements. There are four entrances in total, one on the eastern side and one in each direction. The Sri Yantra, a symbol of power or shakti, is also kept at the shrine. This particular pair of lamp-adorned pillars is exclusive to Maratha art.
Why is Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth significant?
Harsiddhi is counted among the Shakti Peethas, the sites where, in the Puranic account, parts of Sati's body fell as Shiva carried her — tradition places the elbow here. The goddess is worshipped as Harsiddhi or Mangalchandika, and the temple is bound up with the Vikramaditya tradition of Ujjain: she is held to have been the kuldevi of the king, and the site is one of the oldest continuously worshipped Shakti shrines in the city. The present structure is of the Maratha period, built over a much older base.
The temple's two deep stambhas — the black stone lamp pillars that stand in the courtyard — are its best-known feature. Each carries more than five hundred small lamps, and when they are lit on Navratri evenings the effect is the single most photographed sight in Ujjain after Mahakaleshwar itself.
Which rituals and festivals are held at Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth?
Red cloth, coconut, flowers, sindoor and chunari are the customary offerings. Aarti is held morning and evening. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the traditional days for Shakti worship here.
Both Navratris — Chaitra (March or April) and Sharadiya (September or October) — are kept with nine days of worship and with the lighting of the deep stambhas in the evenings. The temple stands beside the Rudra Sagar tank, and the walk between Mahakaleshwar and Harsiddhi is a short one that most pilgrims make.
How do you reach Harsiddhi Shakti Peeth?
The temple is beside Rudra Sagar, a few hundred metres from Mahakaleshwar and about two kilometres from Ujjain Junction railway station. It is an easy walk from the Mahakal complex and is almost always visited in the same circuit.
Footwear is left at the stands outside. Indore airport is about 55 kilometres away.
