Why is Gopal Mandir significant?

The temple was built in the nineteenth century by Bayaja Bai Shinde, queen of Daulat Rao Scindia, and is the principal Krishna temple of Ujjain — the deity is worshipped here as Dwarkadhish, Krishna in his form as king of Dwarka. It is among the largest temples in the city after Mahakaleshwar, built in the Maratha style with marble and a silver-plated sanctum doorway whose history is the subject of a long-standing local tradition.

The temple's most distinctive occasion is Hari Har Milan on Baikunth Chaturdashi, when, by custom, a procession carries Mahakal from his temple to Gopal Mandir and the charge of the universe is ceremonially handed from Shiva to Vishnu for the four months of Kartik — and returned in the same way. It is one of the few observances anywhere that formally joins the Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions of a single city.

Which rituals and festivals are held at Gopal Mandir?

Worship follows the Vaishnava day, with the deities bathed, dressed and offered bhog at set hours and the sanctum closed in the afternoon. Tulsi, flowers and sweets are the usual offerings, and kirtan is held in the hall.

Janmashtami is the principal festival, kept through the night. Hari Har Milan on Baikunth Chaturdashi (November) is the observance the temple is best known for. The Rath Yatra during the month of Kartik and Govardhan Puja are also kept.

How do you reach Gopal Mandir?
