What is the Char Dham Yatra?
Char Dham refers to four shrines placed at the four compass points of India: Badrinath in the north, Dwarka in the west, Puri in the east and Rameshwaram in the south. The grouping is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. It is frequently confused with the Uttarakhand Chhota Char Dham, which is a different and much smaller circuit.

Why does the Char Dham Yatra matter?
The four-corner arrangement is the point of this circuit. It was conceived as a way of binding the subcontinent into one pilgrimage geography, and completing it has historically meant crossing the whole country rather than touring one region.
Because of that, the Char Dham is almost never done as a single journey today. Each dham is a substantial destination with its own temple complex, and the distances between them are national in scale.
In what order should the Char Dham Yatra be done?
Tradition does not fix an order. In practice each dham anchors its own trip:
- Badrinath, in Uttarakhand, is seasonal and is usually combined with the Uttarakhand shrines
- Dwarka, in Gujarat, pairs naturally with Somnath and Nageshwar
- Puri, in Odisha, is usually its own trip around the temple and the coast
- Rameshwaram, in Tamil Nadu, pairs with Madurai and the south Indian temple circuit
How do you plan the Char Dham Yatra?
Decide first which Char Dham you mean. If someone offers you a Char Dham itinerary of about ten days, they are almost certainly describing the Uttarakhand Chhota Char Dham — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath — not the four-corner circuit.
Badrinath sets the calendar. It is open only in its season and closes for winter, so a Badrinath leg has to be planned inside that window.
For the other three, October to March is the comfortable window, and each works best as a trip built around that region rather than a stop on a longer run.
Temple timings and how to reach each shrine are on the individual temple pages linked here. Confirm near your travel date, as festival days change the schedule.
When is the best time for the Char Dham Yatra?
Badrinath only in its open season. Dwarka, Puri and Rameshwaram are best from October to March; Puri and Rameshwaram are humid outside that window.
Temple timings, aarti schedules and access rules change on festivals, eclipses and special occasions, and some shrines are seasonal. Please confirm with the temple or the local administration close to your travel date.
