Simhastha 2028 Snan Dates — Every Bathing Day, and How to Choose Yours

Most people planning Simhastha start with the question of where to stay. That is the wrong end of the problem. Pick the date first — everything else, including what a room costs and how far you will walk on the morning of your snan, follows from it.

Here is the full 2028 calendar, and an honest view of what each kind of day is actually like.

The announced calendar

The Simhastha 2028 mela period at Ujjain has been announced as 27 March to 27 May 2028, on the banks of the Shipra.

The three Shahi Snan

• Sunday, 9 April 2028 — the first Shahi Snan
• Sunday, 23 April 2028 — the second
• Monday, 8 May 2028 — the third

The seven Parva Snan

• 27 March 2028
• 4 April 2028
• 14 April 2028
• 19 April 2028
• 1 May 2028
• 5 May 2028
• 15 May 2028

One caution worth repeating: these are the dates as announced by the administration. Mela schedules are sometimes refined as the event gets closer. Use them to plan, but reconfirm before you commit to non-refundable flights or trains.

What a Shahi Snan day is like

The Shahi Snan is the day the akharas process to the ghats in order, and the day almost every photograph you have seen of a Kumbh was taken. If the processions are the reason you are travelling, this is the day, and no amount of planning substitutes for it.

What you should also expect: the largest crowds of the entire two months, vehicle movement restricted well outside the centre, long approach walks, and a start time that is effectively before dawn. Mobile networks get congested. Meeting a separated family member is genuinely difficult.

It is a superb day for a fit adult or a small group of adults. It is a hard day for a seventy-year-old parent or a five-year-old, and it is worth being honest with yourself about that before booking.

What a Parva Snan or ordinary mela day is like

This is the part many first-time visitors do not realise: a bath taken on any day of the Simhastha period is a Simhastha snan. You do not forfeit the observance by avoiding the peak.

On a Parva Snan day the ghats are busy but navigable. On an ordinary day between the snan dates, Ujjain feels like a very crowded festival city rather than a crush — you can walk, eat, get a vehicle, and take darshan at Mahakaleshwar without the day being an endurance exercise. Rooms cost less and are far easier to find.

A pattern that works well for families: take your own snan on a quieter day, then watch one procession day from a sensible vantage point rather than from inside it.

Heat is a real planning input

Ujjain in late March through May is hot, and May is the hardest of it. Daytime temperatures well above forty degrees are normal.

That has consequences for date choice. The March and early-April end of the window is more forgiving, particularly if anyone in your group is elderly, very young, or managing a health condition. If your dates are flexible and comfort matters more than the specific ritual day, the earlier part of the mela is the kinder half.

Whatever you choose, plan around the clock rather than the itinerary: ghats and temples early, indoors through the middle of the day, out again after four.

A simple way to decide

• You want the processions, you are travelling with fit adults, and you accept a hard day — take a Shahi Snan date, and book your stay much further ahead than feels reasonable.
• You want the snan and unhurried darshan — take a Parva Snan date, or any ordinary day in the window.
• You are travelling with elders or small children — an ordinary day in late March or April, staying close to your ghat.
• You have no date flexibility at all — tell us the dates you are locked into and we will plan around whatever they turn out to be.
