How to Reach Ujjain for Simhastha 2028 — Air, Rail and Road

14 August 2026

Getting to Ujjain is easy. Getting the last few kilometres to your ghat during Simhastha is the part that needs planning. Routes, timings and what to expect on arrival day in 2028.

Ujjain is well connected and reaching the city is not the difficult part of a Simhastha trip. The difficult part is the last stretch — during the mela, vehicle access to the centre is restricted, parking is designated well outside, and the final few kilometres are covered on shuttles or on foot.

Plan the journey in two halves and you will not be caught out.

By air

The nearest airport is Indore, roughly 55 km away, with the widest set of domestic connections in the region. From there it is a road transfer to Ujjain — comfortably under two hours in normal conditions, longer on mela days and considerably longer on a Shahi Snan date.

If you are flying in on the morning of your snan, do not. Fly in the day before. An arrival-day snan leaves no margin for a delayed flight or a diverted road, and those are exactly the days on which both happen.

By rail

Ujjain Junction takes direct trains from a number of cities and puts you within reach of parts of the old city on foot — which during a mela is a real advantage over arriving by road.

Two practical points. First, book far ahead: trains into Ujjain fill for the mela period well before the dates themselves, and the peak snan dates fill first. Second, if you cannot get a direct train, Indore is the usual alternative railhead, with a road transfer from there.

By road

Ujjain is straightforward to drive to, with Indore the usual approach and good connections from across Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring states.

What changes during Simhastha is the endgame. Expect diversions on the approach, parking allocated in designated grounds away from the centre, and a shuttle or walk for the final leg. Private vehicles are not going to be waved through to a ghat on a busy morning, whatever your navigation app suggests.

If you are self-driving, find out where your allocated parking is before you set off, not when you are in the queue for it.

Arrival day, realistically

  • Aim to arrive a day before the snan you have chosen. This is the single most useful scheduling decision in the whole trip.
  • Do not put anything time-sensitive on arrival day — no ceremony, no ticketed anything.
  • On arrival, walk the route from your stay to your ghat in daylight and time it. You will be doing it in the dark, in a crowd, half asleep.
  • Save your stay's address in writing, in Hindi if you can, and keep a local contact number on paper as well as on your phone.
  • Agree a meeting point with your group for the moment somebody is separated. On peak days networks get congested and phones stop being a plan.

Getting around once you are there

Within Ujjain, autos and cabs work normally on ordinary days and are restricted on peak ones. Local transport and shuttle arrangements are put in place for the mela period, and it is worth using them rather than fighting for a private vehicle on a snan morning.

For anything with a fixed time attached — an airport transfer, a train to catch, a temple appointment — arrange a vehicle in advance rather than hoping to find one. You can tell us your route and dates and we will plan the transfers around the mela calendar rather than a normal-day map.

Note on the city itself

Ujjain is undergoing very large-scale civic work ahead of 2028 — roads, ghats, and the approaches to the temples are all being expanded. That is good news for the mela and it means the specifics of routes, parking grounds and shuttle arrangements will be confirmed closer to the time.

We will keep the Simhastha 2028 guide current as those details are announced. If you are on our 2028 list, we will tell you when something changes that affects the dates you have told us about.
